KPMG gives Red Cross appeal all clear
The firm has found no evidence of fraud or misappropriation in the Simple Truth appeal, a British Red Cross campaign, publicly led by disgraced peer Lord Archer.
The firm has found no evidence of fraud or misappropriation in the Simple Truth appeal, a British Red Cross campaign, publicly led by disgraced peer Lord Archer.
The Red Cross brought in forensic accountants from KPMG following accusations that millions of pounds raised for the appeal for Kurdish refugees had gone missing.
This after Lord Archer had boasted he had raised Pounds 57m for the appeal when in reality the figure was Pounds 13.8m.
But according to the independent report, there were no concerns about the accuracy of the total raised by the appeal, although the Red Cross admitted the figures should have been presented with more clarity.
The remaining money had come from various governments and aid agencies, both in the UK and abroad.
Sir Nicholas Young said the KPMG report explained the context in which the figures were announced but accepted they should have had the appropriate caveats attached.
‘We have learned from this experience,’ he said.
