Opinion - Whiting calls for reform.
John Whiting has set the tone for his term as president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation by saying he wants to work for a tax policy committee to mirror the work of the monetary policy committee.
This is an interesting idea and one that deserves exploration. But it is not entirely new. Chas Roy-Chowdhury, head of taxation at ACCA, has advocated the very same measure in articles for Accountancy Age.
Whiting’s hope is that a critical mass of support for reform of our unthinkably complicated tax system can be created. He freely admits that he has not worked out all the final details of the policy committee but if he at least persuades government to start the ball rolling on reform of the tax system he will have achieved a great deal.
