    Tension mounting over 'KPMG merger'

    The big rumour sweeping the offices of several Big Five firms has centred on the excitement that Arthur Andersen - sorry Andersen - might merge with KPMG.

    Stories reached TS from a number of Big Five sources that the two are on the verge of coming together in the US.

    There has been no mention of joining forces in the UK, but tongues have been set wagging. One senior partner at Andersen, said: ‘Everyone has been talking about the move in the office. It would appear the rumour may have begun in KPMG’s offices in New York, but we have heard nothing to substantiate the claim.’

    Given AA is about to spend a small fortune rebranding itself as just plain Andersen, a merger doesn’t seem likely. Also there are conflicts for the two firms in the UK, though not many in the US.
