O2 taps Napster for music downloads

Dual mobile and PC service for 99p per song

Written by Ian Williams

O2 has teamed up with Napster to provide customers with a mobile music download service.

O2 Active will offer access to over five million songs, including dual delivery of tracks to a customer's mobile phone and PC.

The Napster service will be available on over 30 different handsets, each track costing 99p or £4 for five.

Once a song is purchased on the mobile phone, a copy is automatically sent to the email address of the customer's choosing.

The UK deal extends the trial partnership pioneered by Napster and O2 Ireland.

A spokeswoman for O2 said that the cost of the tracks includes the bandwidth used in the download, so heavy users of the service will not exceed data caps or incur further data download charges, according to the operator.
