The anticipated electronic tax-filing revolution has gained momentum after two companies announced initiatives to explore the opportunities the system can provide. Electronic filing company PeopleDoc and Barclays Bank digital signature service Endorse in partnership with chartered Accountants Ashley & Co have both announced developments. But BASDA has warned the companies that the government has not agreed the final details to the legal requirements of its electronic tax-return programme. Edinburgh-based PeopleDoc has announced an initiative to help Sage accountancy software users manage their relevant business information with the launch of its electronic filing system 'EasiFile designed for Sage'. The initiative followed independent investigations to identify the barriers to managing business information. It was found firms want to be allowed to access paper-based and electronic information and Sage documents instantly. 'EasiFile aims to allow users to access information quickly and easily. This product has great potential for Sage users. Companies are required to keep records for six years.Users will benefit from time and cost-saving efficiencies,' said Sage. Meanwhile Barclays Bank digital signature service Endorse has signed up chartered accountants Ashley & Co to enable it to complete the first fully comprehensive e-tax return service in the UK. The Twickenham-based firm already offers the ability to file tax returns and make payments online on its website. But the pilot is looking at adding a digital signature facility to offer customers to sign documents online. However BASDA said nothing has yet been decided: 'The claim is questionable when the government has not yet set the electronic signature rules.'
