The taxman is working through more than 17 million tax problems in addition to the six million reveled at the beginning of the week.

This latest batch of problems goes back up to six years and stems, according to the Daily Mail, from HMRC realising that the liabilities under PAYE did not match the income received by taxpapyers.

However, it is not clear how serious the 17 million open cases might be or whether they would give rise to significant tax demands.

On Monday it emerged that up to 1.4 million people could owe the taxman up to £1,400 in. Around four million others could be due refunds.

Throughout yesterday concern mounted over the errors as HMRC sent out its first mailshot to 45,000 people informing that there was a problem.
