Efforts to foil tax evasion must be ramped up to guarantee efforts to cut the public debt is fair to everyone, the tax chief of the International Monetary Fund has said.
Carlo Cottarelli, director of the IMF's fiscal affairs department, also called for the creation of an independent international body to help to fight tax evasion and co-ordinate tax policy.
"An equitable adjustment will require a more energetic fight against tax evasion and erosion, both nationally and internationally ... Maybe it is time to revive the idea of a World Tax Organisation to address ... co-ordination issues, " said a report written by Mr Cottarelli and Andrea Schaechter, published yesterday.

Re: Tax Evasion.
Like everyone else Carlo Cottarelli may make lots of noises over trapping tax evasion but in fact it is all a load of rubbish.
Working with a recently retired notable senior City solicitor who was a partner in one of the largest firms in the world, we appear to have identified a significant tax evasion and money laundering operation.
Having discussed it with a friend who is a senior HMRC tax inspector; he is totally embarrassed as he too could not even get the HMRC investigation branch to listen to the case.
This involves VAT, and capital gains tax evasion and money laundering through Andorra.
Like the FSA, the police and the Institutions a lot of noise is made but no-one takes responsibility
