HMRC breaks online filing record

HMRC received over 6m self assessment forms online by the deadline this week.

The latest figures beat the previous record of 5.7m documents filed online last year by the 31 January submission date.

A total of 9.5m forms were sent out with online filing representing just fewer than three quarters of all returns recieved, an increase of 12% on last years' figure.

Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, said: “More people than ever before are now filing their tax returns online. It’s easier, quicker and HMRC processes your return faster, so any money you’re owed is repaid more quickly."

The deadline for paper the paper self-assessment deadline was 31 October 2009.
