Lord Kinnock's daughter-in-law attempted to claim almost £14,000 in expenses for accountancy advice after her husband became embroiled in a tax avoidance dispute.

Helle Thorning-Schidmt, the leader of the Danish Social Democrats, ceded to pressure to pay for the advice she received over the ongoing tax case involving her and her husband, Stephen Kinnock, the 40-year-old son of the former Labour leader, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Mr Kinnock's son was the subject of a tax probe in Denmark, which has the highest income taxation rate in the world.

Speaking at a press conference, Thorning-Schidmt denied any wrongdoing.

"We have acted properly and lawfully, and I am sure that tax authorities will confirm that," she said.
