HMRC seizes former football star's pay cheque

Former Scottish football star Maurice 'Mo' Johnston has had a £1,000 pay cheque from the BBC seized by HM Revenue & Customs, as the department looks to recoup a £450,000 tax bill, according to reports.

The £1,000 is understood to have been held in a BBC bank account for his appearance on a Scottish radio sports programme, which will be paid directly to HMRC, reports The Herald.

If Johnston, believed to be residing the US, does not contest HMRC's actions in the next 15 days, the money will be paid to the department.

Johnston made his name in the 1980s when he made the controversial switch from Celtic to Old firm rival Rangers, having spent a period between the two teams at French club Nantes.
