The taxman is warning advisers to get claims in on time or risk leaving their clients empty handed.

HM Revenue and Customs is changing its time limit to claim tax from six to four years.

Self assessment clients intending to claim for the 2004-2005 year, will need to have their claims in by 31 March 2010. For 2005-06, it has to be in by 5 April, 2010.

Brain Redford, deputy director of intermediaries and external communication, said he didn’t want anyone to miss out on claiming money.

“We know that most people claim what they are entitled to in the year they make their Self Assessment tax return. However, it is worth remembering that the time limits for claiming your tax back are changing, from six to four years,” he said.
