Confusion over the Tories' plan to increase the inheritance tax threshold has seen Labour claim disarray in the opposition's camp.

Conservative shadow business secretary Ken Clarke reportedly said that increasing the threshold to £1m was no longer a priority, and a Tory spokesman would not confirm it would be implemented within the first term of a Tory government.

Labour ministers said the Tories' policies were in confusion.

'We've been calling on the Tories for months to scrap this unfair giveaway to the wealthiest few,' said Treasury minister Angela Eagle.

Clarke said he did not see 'any significant difference' with what his position and what colleagues had said in the past.

'This measure will appear in the manifesto and I support it.'
