Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has not let up with his attack on chancellor Gordon Brown's air passenger duty, telling the Parliamentary Monitor that it is a 'tax grab' and has nothing to do with the environment.
O'Leary said everyone had been sucked in by the duty thinking it was an environmental measure.
‘Gordon Brown has lied. It's just a ... tax grab. He says it will go into Treasury pockets and be used for environmental measures. Yeah, and if you believe that...’ he said.
‘Taxing cheap air travel is Brown's contribution to the environment. That is £1bn in taxes, and not one cent of it will be spent on the environment,’ he added.

Mr O'Leary has hit the nail on the head. Any "green" tax that isn't enough to discourage users has nothing to do with the environment, and the sooner the British taxpayer wakes up to this the better.
"Chelsea tractor" taxes is another prime example. It's all about getting taxes into Mr Brown's coffers without hitting the headline rate of income tax.
