Problems have emerged with HM Revenue & Customs' self-assessment filing systems, according to reports.

Advisers have flagged up clients disappearing off previous online filing lists, while penalty notices arrived four months late, building up the charges for clients, reported AccountingWeb.

'We've been through our online client list at HMRC and found 15 clients for whom we filed online last year have disappeared from the list. Why?' said one respondent.

HMRC said that the penalty notices were in line with its timetable, and were only obliged to send a penalty when a return was received late. Penalties issued in September also act as a reminder to those employers who it believes have not sent a return.

A response was awaited for the other issues tax advisers had with the self assessment system.
