Motor tax cuts could follow road pricing plans

Motoring taxation could be cut, despite the government's plan for a nationwide road pricing scheme.

A Whitehall insider told the FT that a national road pricing scheme could pave the way for changes to the current car tax regime, suggesting a reduction in vehicle excise duty.

'We've always said that, if we did it, it would be a revenue-neutral exercise,' the insider said.

InĀ an email sent by the prime minister to 1.8 million road pricing protestors , Tony Blair said the government was not rushing into road pricing and no firm decision had been made on the strategy.
