The health minister has called on the PM to increase taxes of wealthier citizens to help struggling middle-class families feeling the squeeze of the credit crunch.
Ivan Lewis, suggested an increased tax could be introduced at a rate of an extra 10p in the pound on earnings above £250,000 which would bring in an additional £3.5m a year, the Telegraph reported.
Earlier this year he also accused the government of ignoring 'ordinary people' and said that those with middle-class incomes ought not to bear the burden of the imminent downturn.
Lewis' outspoken views have surprised fellow Labourites, as some suggest it could also cost him his job in an upcoming reshuffle.

Here we go again!
Oh dear, it has taken 10+ years but when the going gets tough Labour revert to socialist type and just can't help tax bashing the 'rich'..... no doubt Lewis feels that he is on to a working class vote winner with this hair brained idea but it is doomed to failure as we all know that if you earn £250k+ then you usually have the 'option' whether to pay 'supertaxes' or not, i.e. the 'rich' can afford to change their resident status to somewhere where their wealth and, no doubt, skills will be better recognised and hence rewarded by that jurisdictions tax authority....please Mr Lewis; if you haven't got anything sensible to say then best not to say anything at all!

If he is not careful all those "patriots" eg Frederick Forsythe will disappear into tax exile.
