The largest civil service union has called on the government to halt its programme of job cuts and consider the adverse affect of those cuts on public security.
Following HM Revenue & Customs' loss of data and the announcement of a review into how it happened, the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said that outsourcing, job cuts and office closures had created 'an accident waiting to happen'.
'It is vital that the review announced today considers the effect of these cuts and halts them while the review is ongoing,' said PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.
About 25,000 jobs are expected to be cut at the taxman between 2005 and 2012 as part of its efficiency drive.
