Deloitte team appointed administrators at Land of Leather

13 Jan 2009, Kevin Reed, AccountancyAge

http://www.accountancyage.com/aa/news/1761744/deloitte-team-appointed-administrators-land-leather

Deloitte partners have been appointed as administrators of Land of Leather.

The furniture store retailer, which operates from 109 stores across the UK and Ireland, had been seeking to raise capital or sell the business after 'challenging trading conditions'.

Joint administrator Lee Manning said stores would continue to trade as normal while interested parties were spoken to regarding the sale of the business.

Customers who have paid either a deposit by credit card, Visa debit card or other means since 26 December are fully protected.

'We have written to all customers who have paid a deposit to explain how they are affected. In addition, a dedicated hotline 0800 496 0868 and email enquiry address lol@deloitte.co.uk have been set up for concerned customers,' added Manning.

absolute disgrace

I have jsut been told I will not get my deposit back. I have been sent round in circles for days with noone able to help me on my situation. I originally took out the finance option and now being told I cannot have this. I have also been told I will lose my deposit as I cannot pay the full amount this is ridiculous considering I took the finance option for a reason. The shop tell me to phone the administration helpline no, which just gives you an e-mail address which I have had no reply to. I cannot not afford to lose my deposit something needs to be done about this!

Discruntled customer

We too have not heard no more from deloitte about what is happening - I have spoken to a call centre a few days ago and was told that my suite hasnt even been ordered yet and I couldnt get my deposit back as it is being held in a "Trust fund" by Deloitte until they can find another buyer.!! I am deperate to have another suite as the one we have is knackered (hence reason for a replacement).

Posted by: Sue Shorten , 05 Feb 2009 | 00:00

Same Boat

I am suffering a similar fate - no word - no return of deposit - no comment. Have tried to cancel my order. have spoken to the store the helpline and emailed the administrators. My suite is knackered, at this rate I will be lucky to replace it by next christmas. The government want us to spend money - I am trying to.

No laughing matter

absolute shambles

I think we all who have paid a deposit or even in full for a sofa from LOL have been ripped off, we recieve no letter, no emails, no calls, no money but are simply told to be patient. This is an absolute disgrace, talk about customer service. I think we all should escalate the matter to the OFT (Office of FAIR Trading) since we have been UNFAIRLY treated.

Posted by: JASON McCarthy , 26 Feb 2009 | 00:00

Totally disgusting

Have ordered a 3/2/1 recliner suite from Chichester LoL. Was told by the store they were NOT going to close as they were a small concession within Paul Simon soft furnishings store. Surprise, Surprise LOL lied and closed last Wednesday. The only letter I have had from LOL was dated 16th Feb asking whether we would like free delivery or 5% discount. No one answers the tele 01474 322277 (I've left 5 messages, my husband has left 10). I finally got hold of someone on the 0800 496 0868 number only to be told "contact/speak to the administrators". How can you contact/speak to someone when you have no tele number. I've paid £400 on this invisable furniture only to be told it is somewhere between the UK and China. What are they doing still shooting the cow for the leather!!!! The government/office of fair trading need to take control of this. LOL knew they were going into receivership when we ordered this furniture and paid our deposit. I offered to pay by cash but was told by the salesman that LOL were have problems with cash so could we put this on a debit/credit card (which thankfully we did). I WANT SOME COMMUNICATION FROM DELOITTE, not anautomated email stating we have a large number of emails to reply to so it will take time, no wonder!!! COMMUNICATE WITH EX-CUSTOMERS that is all we ask and put our minds at rest.

Disgraceful

My mother, a recently widowed oap with very little money, bought a suite from LandofLeather on 7th October...
they delivered it on 1st November in totally the wrong colour,(we sent it back, she had ordered burgundy not yellow!)
the fault was totally theirs but then they couldnt supply it in the correct colour so offered to replace it,
but the one she liked was not in stock so she was forced to wait 3 months (without any furniture)
only to be now told she is an unsecured creditor and is unlikely get anything!
And today I read that the low lifes who set land of leather up are now going to set up another sofa sales empire in the old lol shops by august....no doubt with my poor mothers savings !!!!!

HOW CAN DELOITTE HELP LAND OF LEATHER

I completely agree with sally valentine(another badly done to customer) i have exactly the same story, the same automated emails, unreturned phone calls. I have left a million and one messages on answering machines and am frankly sick to death of it. I understand (or am trying hard to!!) that deloitte must have alot on their plates but how can an administrator really help a striken company like land of leather when they cant even give the customers of land of leather any information whats so ever! Mind you at least their quite quick at one thing , its just a shame that one thing is taking your money eg Deposits!!!

Posted by: Mrs Melanie Birch , 23 Mar 2009 | 00:00

very dissappointed customers!

Exactly the same happened to us! went into the cannock LOL january and was told that the store was not going to close, ordered the sofa but was told not to leave a deposit until they knew that we were definately going to get the sofa, was called in feb and told that we were 100% getting the sofa and needed to pay the deposit, went in and was reassured that the store wasnt closing and we would definately get our sofa so we paid! and then hear about closing down sales and turn upto make sure our order is ok to find it closed down. have made numerous phonecalls but its always a recorded message and when it does ring noone picks it up, have also emailed but got nothing back! we are not impressed as we will now have to use money saved for our wedding to buy another :o(.

very unsatified

We first ordered a sofa in Janurary 2008,which should have been delived within three months. we then rung up at the end of march to see what was happening, to be told that they could not find it. we then had to go around to lots of land of leather to lok for a sofa as the one we pick was now discontinued, we then found one that we like , it was going to be delivered to us in augest. when we got the sofa on the first dat there was a lots of marks on it and it was ment to be brand new , they sent someone out to look at it and repair it , which he did , then we noticed some more little marks on it . i rung the store and they said they would send someone out , itold them i was not happy as this was ment to be new , im still waiting for some one to look at my sofa ,i have now been told that because they have become bankrupt that i will have to log my complaint on here and hope that someone will get in touch to look at my sofa as i am not happy with this , they did say that i would get some money back and change the sofa . my sofa it not a year old untill the end of august . i hope that something will be done

Land of Leather Suite

I ordered a suite from Land of Leather on 1st January 2009 at Stockport not realising that they were in trouble financially. I was told I would have delivery in 12 weeks. when I discovered that they were in administration I telephoned the store and no information was forthcoming I then looked on the Web and found the information for the Administrators and I telephoned them. I was then sent a form to fill in asking if I still wished to purchase the suite which I did. I was told that my order would then be honoured and I would receive confirmation of when this would delivered. I heard nothing again I telephoned the help line on the number I had been given by the Land of Leather shop, I left numerous telephone messages as there was no reply and I heard nothing even though the message said that some one would call back as soon as the message was received. I also e-mailed and received an automatic response but again no telephone call even though I put my telephone number on the e-mail. I did eventually get through by telephoning the Admisitrators office direct and was told I would have delivery by the end of May todate (28.05.09) I have still heard nothing. I think that some possible compensation regarding this would be quite acceptable and I dont mean just the deduction of the delivery charge. I also would like to know if the Insurance Cover will be honoured as I have also paid approximately £200- for this previledge. I can understand why a suite should take 6 months from placing of the order to the actual delivery. I would be most grateful for a response to this e-mail.

Can you believe it??

I bought a sofa last July from LoL, I took out finance over 12 months, the sofa was delivered to LoL in Oct but was the wrong one! ( Anyone Surprised )Then obviously the re-order was another 3 months. I cancelled the order in Jan 09 as I knew they were in trouble. I have just had the finance company try and take the first paymeny out of my account May 09. I had obviously cancelled the direct debit as had never received the goods. Now I have threatning letters, phone calls and extra charges being added to this account from this finance company.
I explained the situation to them and they said I should contact the administrators of LoL. As per all of you, too no avail.
I come home from work tonight and find another letter from Creation Finance threatening me with a debt collection agency over the first months direct debit plus costs £322.33. This is after 2 phone calls and a letter I sent in the last week.
Please tell me if you think I am being over sensitive here, but God Almighty what a state of affairs to be in.
I am now more worried about, not the fact of having the sofas but what the hell is this company doing to my credit rating???
Deloitte wont contact me and the finance say they wont stop untill they here otherwise from the administrators.
Is this legal?

still waitng for our Sofa

ordered a suite from Land of Leather on 4th January 2009 at Lakeside not realising that they were in trouble financially. No telephone call even though I put my telephone number on the message. Admisitrators office called and told we would have delivery by the 20th june and they will call us back to confirm but as at today we have note heard. I think that some possible compensation regarding this would be quite acceptable and I dont mean just the deduction of the delivery charge. I would like to know if the Insurance Cover will be honoured as I was offered as part of the deal. I can not understand why a suite should take 6 months from placing of the order to the actual delivery. I would be most grateful for a response to this e-mail.

sofa wars

Firstly I am very sypathetic towards the administration however I am feeling very disgruntled regarding the treatment I am recieving. I was led to believe I had ordered my sofa on january 1st 2009 a few days later I read that lol had gone into administration.

I then contacted the administrators who politly tell me to wait, I will be mailed in due course and my order was being fulfilled (Great). Days and weeks go by until after another phone call I find out that you do not have my correct address this is corrected.

Then on th 16th February I recieve mail to say that my order has NOT been ordered and that I should choose which option to take free delivery or 5% discount within seven days or I risk putting the deposit at risk. I am now feeling trapped and accept the free delivery as I do not want to loose my deposit.

I then recieve another letter on 20th March 2009 7 days after the date stated on the headed paper dated 13.03.2009 telling me my order will NOW be ordered within the next five days from the 13th march. Therefore not a lot I can do happy or not the mail arrives to late.

After trying to telephone on several occasions and being unable to speak with anyone I eventually speak to someone who abrubtly tells me my sofa is ordered and I will recieve it on the 1st june. That date has come and gone and to be fair I feel I have realisticly waited since January 1st and I am still waiting my patience has run out. I would just love them to cancel the order and give me my deposit is that to much to ask we are all in the same credit crunch.

Recliner Chair

I am getting madder and madder as the months go on. I order a simple recliner in January, I wanted to buy the one in the shop but was told there would be no problems getting my chair but it would take 8-10 weeks. I was told i did not need to pay a deposit but in February i got a phonecall telling me if i didn't pay my deposit i would not get my chair, so I reluctantly paid the deposit and was told it would be 8-10 weeks from then. A little annoyed I said ok ill wait. Then a couple of weeks later i got an letter telling me i had to decide either free delivery or 5% off or my deposit would be lost. As it was just a chair i opted for the discount. I was told it would be 8-10 weeks from then. That was the end of Feb. In May I got a phonecall telling me i would have my chair 24th June. I heard nohtign adn today (18th June) I rang to see what was happening only to be told - there were problems in China and they have had to send someone out and it would now be 27th July 2009. How much longer am i suppose to wait and how much longer can I be put off!!! I doon't know what to do - should I cancel and try somewhere else where I will have to wait 8-10 weeks or shoudl we give it another month and see what happens. Can Land of Leather be trusted to actually give us our chair!!

Posted by: Carrie Benson , 18 Jun 2009 | 00:00

How much longer!

We ordered our sofa from Land of Leather on 16/10/2008 and guess what...were still waiting! Were sitting on the floor at the moment!

another disgruntled customer

we too purchased a sofa from LOL on 4/01/2009 with delivery in 12 weeks, it is now June and still no sofa. We phoned LOL and spoke to someone and was told end June beginning July tried phoning them again today for an update and no person on other end of phone typical. We have paid for our sofa in full and have been told it is on its way. I phoned Deloitte on the number on their website and they said we will put you through to the lady dealing with all orders with an automayed press 1 for etc that is the number I have been phoning I am getting a little concerned now as there is no person on the other end of the phone ..... has anyone had their sofa delivered since all this started with LOL please ????

Posted by: sharon cummins , 10 Jun 2009 | 00:00

News?

Has anyone got any further updates on when we can expect to receive our goods? I, like many on here, purchased my sofa in December and many phone calls and letters later I am informed the sofa will arrive within 12 weeks of when the order was processed (March). Well yet again broken promises and ignored phone calls have resulted in the unknown. Someone below mentioned problems in China pushing back the delivery date, can this be confirmed?

I feel the worst thing in business is to under estimate delivery times, as you leave customer expecting a due date. Then when it doesn't arrive it leaves them angry, upset and the trust between customer and the business is lost.

I would rather they told me it wouldn't arrive until September than be let down time and time again, but seriously how long does it take to make then ship a sofa from China..... a couple of months at most!

LAND OF LEATHER CROOKS

I too ordered a recliner sofa just before they went bust in Jan 2009.I Unfortunately paid in cash £400 with a balance of £200 to pay.I got the letter about the delivery charge reduction etc which i agreed to.however just after this i saw one in harveys i so I spoke to the store in Oldham were I ordered it from. They said no problem they would inform the administrators who would cancel the order and return the payment. At the beginning of August I received a call to say my sofa had arrived in the country.I explained I had cancelled the order and was waiting a refund.A week or so later I was told my sofa was ready for delivery the next day.I once again explained it had been cancelled.Needless to say I have rang the numbers put out and tried to contact the administrators but to no avail.I cannot afford to lose £400 and desparately need someone to help get my money back.

Land of Leather

What is happening with the administrators there phones have been cut off and the finance company say they can not get hold of them? I have not received my sofa and have had no correspondence since February and I have a credit agreement but no goods. What do I do? I am in contact with the finance but they are not being very helpful at the moment.

A few answers... no postcard...

Mrs Bailey - Try contacting Black Horse as they did a lot of LoL finance.
Mrs Dahir - You're not the Administrator's customer , LoL is.
Sally Sandiford - You should complain to the finance company under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act (1974).
