PwC best green accountancy firm

Only two accountancy firms have made it into a list of the Top 50 Best green companies.

PricewaterhouseCoopers was ranked at 15th in The Sunday Times' list, with Deloitte at 42nd.

PwC has reduced its carbon emissions 45% through various changes including sourcing 90% of its energy from renewables, and cutting its air miles by 1.1m miles.

Deloitte has reduced its carbon footprint by one fifth in 18 months and increased its recycling by 40%.

KPMG has pledged to cut its carbon emissions by a quarter by 2010, but were not on the list.

Coffin makers J C Atkinson and Son topped the list. It uses the remaining waste from coffin production to power a generator supplying most of the energy requirements of the company.

Bank HBOS came 6th, just behind construction companies Carillion, 2nd and Skanska UK, 5th. Ethical bank Co-op came 3rd, the only other big company to make the top 10.

Other big companies that made the list included Total E&P UK, the biggest North Sea oil and gas producers were ranked 11th, Logica 16th and Aggregate Industries 28th.

The ranking measured what a company or oganisation does to reduce its carbon footprint as opposed to the quantity of their emissions.
