David McKeith, 56, senior north-west partner at accountancy giant PricewaterhouseCoopers is retiring after seven years in the post and almost two decades with the firm.
McKeith, one of the region's best-known business leaders in recent years, leaves a position where he leads more than 850 staff across Manchester and Liverpool, the Manchester Evening News reports.
He will be succeeded in January by Nick Boden.
McKeith is president of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, which he is said to have has steered through troubled waters after chief executive Angie Robinson reportedly had an affair with Michael Todd, the then Chief Constable of Greater Manchester.
