Technical problem blights self assesment website

Reports have surfaced that tax payers are meeting with technical problems when submitting self assessment returns online.

The Daily Telegraph reports users of the website have met with error messages and a note saying the system had been unable to verify that their filing had been made.

The paper quotes an HMRC spokesman saying the problem affected only a small number of people.

Last year the system crashed just before the 31 January deadline for returns.
