HMRC denies tax inspectors' team will expand

The taxman has denied reports that it is expanding its investigations team tenfold to target offshore tax havens and trusts.

Papers reported at the weekend that its civil investigations unit would expand tenfold to 2,000 inspectors in a bid to target offshore tax avoiders, but HM Revenue & Customs has denied the claim.

'HMRC have no plans to expand our civil investigations unit. The Special Civil Investigations unit (SCI) seeks to tackle fraud and non-compliance across the whole range of duties for which HMRC is responsible,' said a spokeswoman.
