Laplink's migration tool gets customisable

Laplink Software has released a new version of its PCmover tool

Laplink Software has released a new version of its PCmover tool that helps transfer user environments from one PC to another, adding much greater control over what applications and files get migrated. The firm also plans a full enterprise version of the tool to support company migrations to Windows Vista.

Version 3 of PCmover, available to download now, enables users to select which applications and folders get moved to the new system, and specify whether particular file types get transferred across or blocked.

"Previous versions basically moved everything over, because we took the view it is better to do this rather than have the user miss something. But after feedback from users, we've made it easier to customise the migration," said Laplink vice president of global marketing, Emir Aboulhosn.

PCmover optionally ships with a USB 2.0 cable to directly link the old and new systems while migration takes place. Transferring data this way can take a couple of hours to transfer 30-40GB of data, according to Laplink. Migration also works across a network connection.

"The two machines can be anywhere on the network, and will automatically find each other once PCmover is installed. An IT manager can sit at his desk and oversee the operation," Aboulhosn said.

However, Laplink also plans a full enterprise version of the product better suited to larger migrations. This will include features such as zero-touch migration and logging records of all operations carried out, Aboulhosn said. This version is slated for Q2 or Q3 2008, which is a timeframe that has been mooted as when some larger companies are planning to kick off a migration to Windows Vista.

PCmover costs about £40 in the UK, or about £50 if bought with a USB data cable. It will be available in stores from the Autumn.
