“Previously, someone locked out of a system had to go to another machine or call the helpdesk to unlock their account,” said Chris Stoneff, product manager at Lieberman Software.

The tool enables authorised delegated users to securely reset an expired password, according to the firm Workers are enrolled into the system through administrator-defined identity verification questions.

Account Reset Console supports existing versions of Windows such as XP and 2000, NT and Windows Server 2003, as well as Microsoft Pocket PC PDAs. It uses Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server Express for its core database.

Pricing for the tool starts at $6 (£3) per user, with a minimum of 100 users. Upgrades and unlimited support are provided for one year. A free evaluation version can be downloaded from the Lieberman Software website.
