Intel's Xeon soars to top of the class

Written by Nick Booth

Intel Xeon Quad Core consolidated its leading position as best selling PC server
processor in distribution in February, according to figures released today by
Context. The study covers the UK, French and German markets.

Xeon Quad Core's market share soared to 46 per cent in February, up from 44 per
cent and 36 per cent in January and December respectively. On the other hand the
Xeon Dual Core actually lost market share in February, achieving dropping from
36 per cent of the market (in the previous month) to 34 per cent. In third
position came the AMD Opteron Dual Core, with a 9 per cent share in February,
which is a three per cent drop from its high of 12 per cent in January, which itself was a growth of two per cent on December.

In the UK market Xeon Quad Core achieved 49 per cent market share in PC servers
sold in the distribution channel. This is up from 47 per cent January, a similar
trend to the one shown in the aggregated data for the three main European
countries, said Context report author Paola Troilli.

There was some good news for the vendors of Xeon Dual Core. It gained some
market share, registering 28 per cent of sales in February (up two percentage
points month-on-month). Opteron Dual Core was third with 15 per cent, its lowest
slump in market share since March 2007.
