Continental
has this month become the latest airline to launch a carbon offsetting
programme.
The airline said the voluntary programme would allow customers to view the
carbon footprint of their itinerary and make a contribution to sustainable
tourism lobby group
Sustainable Travel
International.
The non-profit group will than use the customer contributions to purchase
carbon offset credits from independently verified offset projects.
Continental said the scheme was the latest in a line of initiatives to limit
the company's environmental impact. It added that streamlined operational
processes and a $12bn investment in 270 fuel efficient aircraft has resulted in
a 35 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per mainline revenue
passenger mile over the past 10 years.
"Having a high-profile, high-quality offset programme available to
Continental's customers is a significant step for mainstreaming carbon
offsetting in air travel," explained Brian T. Mullis, president of Sustainable
Travel International. "When combined with energy efficiency, greater use of
renewable resources, waste reduction and thoughtful consumption, offsetting
offers a solid strategy for addressing concerns associated with climate change.
"
Offsetting services have become increasingly commonplace among airlines, with
BA, easyJet and Virgin all offering customers the opportunity to offset flight
emissions.
