"I am very pleased that Brendan Nelson has agreed to join our Board and to undertake the important role of chairman of the group audit committee," said Philip Hampton, chairman of RBS.

Brendan was the first accountant to be appointed as a member of the Practitioner Panel, a UK statutory body which represents the financial services industry to the FSA, and served six years as a panel member.

He joined Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co in 1974, which merged with Thomson McLintock in 1987 to form KPMG.

RBS was bailed out by the government following the credit crunch receiving £12bn from a rights issue and £20bn from the government.
