Accountant creates tax software for accountants

An accountant so fed up with the lack of versatility when it comes to tax
software for smaller practices has invented his own product, BTCSoftware, and
has now ventured into self assessment.

The company recently launched its self assessment product which allows
unlimited personal, partnership and trust returns for approximately £350. The
company hopes to launch several more products to assist smaller practice
accountants in the next year.

Ian Katté, who co-founded BTCSoftware, qualified as a charted accountant in
1981 with Ernst & Whinney

He worked with Ernst & Young for eight years in the UK as well as
overseas, latterly as senior manager in the privately owned business services
division. He later started his own practice, based in Surrey, in 1989.

Katté, who was frequently frustrated by the lack of versatility of tax
software products for small practices, described software on the market as ”
poorly designed, clunky and hardly great value for money.”

He then met with Rob Ellis, an entrepreneur specialising in software
ventures, and created BTCSoftware which has grown to over 300 customers in the
last five years.

Katté said: “BTCSoftware started out more or less as a hobby and grew mainly
by word of mouth – almost something of a well-kept secret!’

“But with the move into self assessment with SA Solution, much more marketing
activity and other new products due soon, we expect the business to grow
significantly” he added.
