Angela Swarbrick and Tom Burton will attempt to sell the business as a going concern.

'SpeedFerries Limited operates in a highly competitive industry and has been affected by a general downturn in the industry related to a reduction in customer travel over recent months and rising fuel costs,' said Swarbrick.

The company runs ferries between Dover and Boulogne.

Several crossings have been cancelled. It is too early to say what will happen to customers with pre-booked tickets, said an Ernst & Young spokeswoman.

A customer services enquiry line is offered at: 0871 222 7456.
