Quinlan has spent the past 16 years at Marks & Spencer plc in a number of capacities, including establishing an investor relations function, and since 2005 was the director of financial control.

Charles Berry, chairman of Drax, said the directors are delighted to welcome Quinlan to the company board.

'Tony brings to the board extensive experience and knowledge of working within the plc environment, is a highly commercial senior finance professional with significant experience and particular strengths in corporate finance, financial control and investor relations,' Berry said.

The appointment is effective from 1 September.
