ICO prosecutes Bolton firm

The Information Commissioners' Office has prosecuted Bolton-based Saleem & Co Accountants

Written by Rachael Singh

Azhar Saleem of Saleem & Co Accountants has been prosecuted by the Information Commissioners Office for offences under the data protection act.

Saleem failed to notify himself with the ICO as a data controller despite consistent reminders from the ICO. The Data Protection Act states that any organisation that deals with an individual's personal information may be required to notify the ICO and pay a charge of £35 annually.

He was fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £428.50 plus a victims' surcharge of £15 at Bolton Magistrates Court.

Mick Gorrill, Assistant Commissioner at the ICO, said: 'This prosecution will remind accountancy firms of their obligations to notify and to ensure that any personal information is held securely, is accurate, up-to-date and is processed fairly'.
