Cameron: tax burden isn't everything

Tory leader says tax cuts may be possible in first Tory administration

Written by Alex Hawkes

David Cameron has said voters should not focus on the tax burden when considering whether the government has cut tax.

'Using the tax burden is never a good idea because you can reduce or increase the tax burden depending on what you do with government borrowing. It is not a good measure of our success,' he said in an interview with the FT.

The Tory leader was outlining the Tories' position on tax. Public finances were in a 'bad state', he said, although he added that tax cuts might still be possible in a first Tory government.
