Mayor’s aide falls on his sword

The London mayor’s senior aide Jasper, at the centre of LDA grant furore, has resigned

Written by AccountancyAge.com

London mayor Ken Livingstone's race adviser, Lee Jasper, resigned yesterday – a day before he was to give evidence to the London Assembly over the misuse of London Development Agency Dgrants – blaming the ‘racist nature of a relentless media campaign’ for his decision.

A Greater London Authority statement has paid tribute to Jasper's work, saying there was no foundation for the allegations against him, BBC News reports.

‘It has become clear that a number of matters which are not of first importance in London are being used to distract from the crucial questions in the election campaign,’ Jasper said in a letter to the mayor.

‘The racist nature of a relentless media campaign and the consequent effects on myself and family have placed an intolerable strain on all of us. I have decided to put a stop to this by tendering my resignation.’
