The BBC's financial director Zarin Patel, is considering plans for the partial sale or flotation of its commercial division, BBC Worldwide.
Patel described the idea as a 'tempting' way of generating more money but she still held concerns over losing control of the broadcaster's name.
Said Patel: 'We have to think about brand control. Who do we want to be in bed with?'
The international division is valued at more than £2bn, and could raise more than £500m if sold.
Patel is also looking into the commercialisation of the BBC's research and innovation centre.
