EU finance chiefs red flag UK deficit

European finance ministers take chancellor to task and urge him to give the public finances an injection

EU finance chiefs have warned that the UK's public spending deficit is in danger of breaching a key threshold.

The Brussels-based finance ministers called for Alistair Darling to kick-start fiscal improvement in efforts to avoid the UK's deficit rising to more than 3% of GDP.

A significant deterioration in the UK's budgetary position was partly to blame, The Times reported.
