Ordnance Survey accounting slammed

House of Commons select committee calls for mapping organisation to be more transparent about it spending

Written by David Jetuah

MPs have panned the Ordnance Survey department for a lack of clarity on its spending.

The criticisms came after the Ministry of Defence MOD told the Commons select committee on Communities and Local Government that the 'stringency and complexity' OS applies to use of its data had led to confusion.

The committee called for the mapping body to beef up its accounting procedures, recommending that 'OS distinguish as clearly as possible between the its functions as a national mapping agency and those it conducts as a commercial, profit-making body.'

Committee chair, Dr Phyllis Starkey said: 'The fact the MOD is uncertain what use it may make of the data it buys from OS displays some lack of clarity in the licences OS offers customers.'
