‘We will not be using Mr Hart-Davis in any self-assessment advertising
campaigns in the future,’ HM Revenue & Customs said.
The department is believed to be furious with Hart-Davis, who said that he
wished tax was simpler and described VAT as ‘absurdly complicated’.
He expressed sympathy for people who were self-employed, saying that their
tax affairs were very difficult to administer because they were so complex.
Hart-Davis also called for the introduction of a flat tax and said the merger
of the Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise in 2005 was a mistake, saying the
two departments were too large to ‘slam together’.
Hart-Davis could not be reached at the time of going to press.
