Race to succeed PwC's Poynter is wide-open

Four candidates nominated in the race to succeed Poynter as senior partner of PwC

Written by Alex Hawkes and Michelle Perry

The race to succeed Kieran Poynter as senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers is set to see at least four candidates nominated, with no hot favourite as yet.

Nominations open ‘shortly’ for the position, PwC said this week, with a successor to be named in April and take over in July.

Richard Collier-Keywood, the UK head of tax, Richard Sexton, the UK head of assurance, and Glyn Barker, another senior partner on the UK managing board, are all said to be in the running. Paul Boorman, global managing partner for markets and operations, is also understood to be a likely candidate.

The nomination process involves partners putting themselves forward, with senior members of the firm often giving candidates a tap on the shoulder and advising them to stand.

Poynter has been senior partner since 1 July 2000, and replaced Peter Smith. He came from the supervisory board, but it is expected partners with managerial board experience are more likely contenders this time around.

A source said: ‘If the firm had been doing really badly and the time had come for change,’ a supervisory figure might have been more likely, but it is expected the firms’ partners will vote for more of the same.

A spokeswoman for the firm said this week: ‘The formal nomination process will commence shortly.’
