Scotland to use seized gang gains to hire accountants in organised crime fight

Scotland is planning to hire an army of accountants to fight organised crime and pay them with cash seized from illegal operations.

According to Scotland on Sunday £400,000 is to be used in 2008-09 to recruit forensic accountants, investigators and lawyers to increase the size of the Civil Recovery Unit and the National Casework Division at the Crown Office.

Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill said the strategy would create a 'virtuous circle'.

Since 2002 £17m has been recovered from criminal activity in Scotland.
