Almanza to takeover as Hundred Group chair

Low-key CFO of BG Group to lead powerful business lobby group

Written by Nicholas Neveling

Ashley Almanza, the low-key chief financial officer of oil giant BG Group, is to takeover the chairmanship of the influential Hundred Group next month.

Almanza will be proposed as the successor to current chair Philip Broadley at the lobby group's AGM to be held on 26 November. Broadley is the outgoing finance director of Prudential.

The high-profile position as the head of what is perhaps the most respected and influential accounting and finance lobby group will see the Almanza thrust into the spotlight as the profession comes to terms with the credit crunch and ongoing concerns over competition and choice in the audit market.

The 44-year-old Almanza has worked his way up to the BG Group board after starting out his career at the old British Gas company in 1993.

He has survived the massive restructuring that British Gas has undergone since then and has served as chief financial officer since August 2002.

Almanza is highly-respected in the City, but keeps a notoriously low profile for a FTSE 100 CFO. He rarely grants press interviews and is known for focusing relentlessly on his job.
