Gaines-Cooper 'tax exile' appeal kicks off

Tax exile begins his campaign to have verdict overturned in high-profile case, leaving individuals with similar lifestyles on tenterhooks

Written by David Jetuah

Robert Gaines-Cooper's appeal to secure a U-turn in his watershed tax exile case is under way.

Proceedings kicked off yesterday at the High Court.

Gaines-Cooper had argued that he was a legitimate tax exile despite his British citizenship, a number of homes in the UK, a fondness for English country pursuits and attendance of Royal Ascot, but judges sided with the taxman.

The case will be closely monitored by the 'Monaco millionaires', who live outside the UK but jet in to the country for 90 days a year to carry out business.

The case continues.
