As many as 16,000 penalties have been issued incorrectly to businesses over their PAYE returns, the taxman has admitted.
HM Revenue & Customs said that of 202,000 penalty notices issued to businesses for failing to send in their PAYE end of year return on time, as many as 8% of notices have been issued incorrectly.
