PBR could be as early as next week

Speculation mounts that chancellor will deliver PBR next week, as snap election looks more likely

Written by Nicholas Neveling

The pre-Budget report could be delivered as early as next week if prime minister Gordon Brown decides to call a snap election for November.

Tax experts and accounting firms had anticipated that chancellor Alistair Darling would deliver his pre-Budget report on October 17, but the profession is now preparing for a PBR statement and the comprehensive spending review next week.

Brown has taken a substantial lead over the Conservatives according to various polls. Should an early election be called, as expected, the PBR is likely to be held before a poll.
