New AstraZeneca CFO has big shoes to fill

Written by Penny Sukhraj

AstraZeneca has named former Scottish Power finance chief Simon Lowth as CFO.

He replaces Jon Symonds, who took the company through its adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards.

Lowth, a former FD at Scottish Power, played a major role in the rejection of an offer in 2005 by E.On to buy the company, along with the success of the Iberdrola S.A. bid in 2006.

Symonds, who resigned in June to join Goldman Sachs as managing director, leaves a legacy which includes overseeing the $34bn (£16.7bn) merger that resulted in the formation of AstraZeneca and being a former chairman of the Hundred Group of Finance Directors.
