Tories propose tax cuts in 'party of fairness' claim

Newly announced plans in tackling poverty are set to overshadow Brown's tax policy

Cutting inheritance tax for the relatively well-off is consistent with the
Tories new claim to be the party of fairness, according to George Osborne,
shadow chancellor.

Osborne said the prime minister’s attempt’s to tackle poverty has thus far
been unsuccessful.

‘After a decade of means-tested cash payments, we are left with greater
inequality of health, education and ambition than we have seen for decades,’ he
said.

In addition, Osborne said that the Tories’ policy centres around lowering
taxes as well as adopting a fairer stance on how tax is distributed, the
FT reported.

‘A fair tax system is one which, yes of course, is progressive, but also
rewards aspiration,’ he said.
