The defence lawyer for former WorldCom head Bernie Ebbers has hit out at prosecution witnesses, accusing them of lying in an attempt to avoid prison.

The Times reports that Ebbers' lawyer, Reid Weingarten, claimed that the testimony of 14 prosecution witness, especially WorldCom's former chief accountant David Myers, was untruthful.
Weingarten claimed that Myers, who had pleaded guilty and helped the prosecution, was a 'henchman' of former WorldCom finance chief Scott Sullivan and had lied about the involvement of Ebbers' in the fraud to cover himself.
Ebbers is facing allegations that he was behind a plan to falsely inflate revenues and hide costs, which lead to WorldCom's record $11bn collapse in 2002. He faces life imprisonment if found guilty.
