The European Commission has nominated British chartered accountant Brian Gray as its fourth appointee to the post of chief financial officer for the £63bn a year EU budget, filling the shoes of whistleblower Marta Andreasen.

He will come to the post from the position of the commission's regional policy director general, stepping up in rank to deputy director general.
The position was previously held by whistleblower Marta Andreasen, who was booted from her desk in May, after casting doubt on the accounts of 2001, as being open to fraud.
Gray, will faces two major challenges: one will be getting the 2001 accounts cleared by the European Parliament, in what is known as the 'discharge' process, due for March. The other is to oversee a promised upgrade of accounting software.
Meanwhile, Marta Andreasen, the whistle blower, is on full pay but undergoing what appears to be a slow speed disciplinary procedure by the commission. She is accused of breaking staff rules, such as regulations against speaking out.
