The club is likely to become the first of many football clubs to succumb to a drop in advertising revenues and a lack of public interest this year.

All of the club's assets will be sold and it will be placed in full liquidation. The assets, including the club's building, its fixtures and fittings, and a small retail unit in Airdrie town centre, as well as the Airdrie FC name will be sold. But the ground and stands will not be sold as they belong to North Lanarkshire council.

Joint interim liquidator Blair Nimmo said: 'Sadly, as there is no one willing and able to buy the Club, we have no alternative but to market its assets for sale.

'Hopefully, the Club name will now be sold to a buyer determined to see Airdrie FC return as a force in Scottish football, albeit as a completely new entity. If that is the case, we will do everything we can to assist.'

If a buyer is found for the Airdrie FC name, it is unsure whether the new club will remain in the Scottish football league.

Nimmo added: 'We have explored every possible avenue and mechanism for saving the Club in its current form, however we all need to recognise that the game in Scotland is facing severe financial problems. This is compounded by the particularly difficult financial and legal circumstances facing Airdrie FC.'
