Accountancy Age Awards 2006 winner: Goodman Jones – best use of internet by a practice

Written by AccountancyAge.com

The 2006 winner of the award for Best Use of Internet by a Practice is Goodman Jones. The judges applauded the firm for creating a site that was truly aligned with customer needs. They also praised the site’s innovation and ‘stunning presentation’.
The website combines a creative and stylish approach with a strong customer focus. Facilities include the ability to hold online meetings between clients and advisers, plus an online banking facility the judges called ‘outstanding’.

In a clear departure from the more common brochure sites, Goodman Jones offers an online accounting system to clients. GJ Online lets clients process all accounting records in a simple and secure way, and view records on a clear and efficient interface.

Having accounting information online also allows the firm to confer with its clients using the most up-to-date information available. Client and adviser can view the same data, and Goodman Jones can give immediate problem solving. ‘We can give advice knowing that our recommendations are based on accurate real-time information.’

Additionally, the site has an online meetings facility, which supports real-time training, cutting down on the need for face-to-face sessions, and addressing problems immediately.

The site also includes a blog, maintained by Goodman Jones partner Philip Woodgate, to provide a ‘fresh perspective’ for SMEs.

Woodgate regularly updates the blog, which is there to allow users to exchange views and experiences on subjects ranging from good management and marketing to credit control. The blog has had 12,000 hits since January.

The site has been designed with clients in mind, and usefulness and value are the watchwords. Above all it conveys a level of technological competence that clients appreciate. As one said: ‘It has a professional look but still gets across the message that Goodman Jones is a friendly and approachable firm. I don’t know any other firm of chartered accountants that has such a high degree of technological expertise (where we have a big requirement) as well as being able to help me run my business in a way that I can understand.’

MORE APPLAUSE

Clients greatly appreciate the site. One says: ‘Goodman Jones’ new website is such a doddle to get around. Everything is so clearly laid out, I can easily find what I’m looking for in a couple of clicks.’ And another says: ‘SME Blog is a great way to stay in touch with issues that impact small and medium-sized enterprises. The informal nature of the site means it is easy to dip into and read.’
