Right, back to tax. Mentioning Jeremy Newman's blog just now made me remember something I'd been meaning to blog about: the lack of blogs by senior tax advisers.
Jeremy's blog is worth a look - and it is perhaps unsurprising that BDO should be the first to launch their leader forth in this way given the huge push they have at the moment to take on the Big Four.
I wonder how it works for BDO from a marketing perspective. Blogs reach people in a different way to other kinds of marketing, I think. The networks and communities they spawn are large and often give you unexpected insights into who is interested in what you're doing.
What surprises me is that tax advisers don't use them to get their views across. Given the number of press releases we get from all the firms, why don't advisers use blogs to highlight issues and give the views that they are sending out anyway? It's another platform, and you're less dependent on a journalist actually choosing to use your quote to reach an audience.
For my part, I'd like to see blogs by the following people: Bill Dodwell, the Deloitte corporate tax partner; Mike Warburton and Paddy Behan from Grant Thornton; John Whiting, Stephen Coleclough and Peter Cussons from PwC; Chris Morgan at KPMG; and Chris Sanger at E&Y.
All of them are well informed about what is going on and all of them have good gossip to pass on. So if the relevant marketing people/decision makers at those firms could, er, sort them out with blogs, I'd be very grateful.
The other person whose blog would be good fun is Dave Hartnett, HMRC's effective policy supremo.
Perhaps things he said on the blog could be given the status of law. That would not only wind people up. It would also dramatically shorten all that tedious process of going through parliament to set tax law.

Thanks for pointing me to Jeremy's place. Several points - I'm always searching for accounting blogs from the big boys (actually any firms will do!) but the reality is there are very few that are visible or which use the techniques available to bloggers such that they get attention. This is frustrating because it is so easy - once you know how.
As you now know Alex, blogs are like gardens. They need tending. They respond best when the blogger understands the commitment and mutual value proposition of sharing and collaboration among people with like interests. That has not been explained to many professionals.
Marketing blogs? We call those flogs - a derisory term perhaps but most I've seen are rubbish. Not helped by the utter contempt with which Edelman chooses to abuse the blog metaphort by setting up fake blog sites that fool the reader into thinking they're seeing something authentic. To me that sucks and puts people off.

I just recently signed a two year contract with AT&T. In order to get the iphone, does that mean that I have to stay with AT&T for 2 more years (making it 4 years) in order to get the iphone 3g? Do I have to terminate my current contract? How much will it cost?

I know i can use my iPhone to control my computer, but i want to do the oppisite b/c my iPhone is hooked up to my stereo system while I am doing my work so i can listen to music, but it is a pain to go to the other room if i want to chnage the song, if i can do that strait from my computer i would not have to subject my self to such things! THANX!

Hi, first I want to thank the Dev-Team for their great job !! I live in Japan and use the Softbank carrier. My I-Phone is the 32GS with 3.1.2 and unlocked and jailbroken with Blackrain and Blacksnow (Windows). Problem is, for the 3rd time in a few months, my phone suddenly stops working. It suddenly freezes and if you restart it then the only thing you see is the white apple mark with the phone that for hours tries to restart itself (and it won't). Until now I had no problem, I just restored it and then I just had to jailbreak and unlock it again....If I try to RESTORE it now I have only 2 choices from I-Tunes : (1) restore and UPDATE (which automatically updates to 3.1.3 doh) or (2) cancel (which of course means you keep your broken I-Phone) Can somebody give me a good advise on what to do please ?? I'm quite desperate...

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

I know this is a bit OT, but has anyone seen the pics of the oil spill taken by a passenger on a flight?
The oil goes as far as the eye can see, even from up there.
It's far worse than they're telling us and this is dreadfully bad, and it needs to be sorted out RIGHT NOW!

I am just starting to get serious about making some cash from my blog presence (as slight as it is ATM), and have been having the feeling that I am not qualified. This entire catastrophe with BP is ridiculous. The measure of leaking into the Gulf of Mexico skyrocketed by 1000s of barrelfuls Wednesday after an underwater robot plainly hit the containment cap that has been getting oil from BP's Macondo well. I wonder how much devastation this entire catastrophe is going to cost the ocean when it's all over

One thing that we will never have, though, is the opportunity to go back to 2002 and jump in at the beginning. I remember thinking about blogs as the online version of journals. I never thought of it as a business platform and dismissed them. Now I feel a little bit like the guy who passed on signing the Beatles.

In an effort to overcome poor spamming always on my journal, I would likely add a little disclaimer at the side of the comment box. I might let the blog readers realize that I really encourage them to get exposure for his or her services as long as they invest some favorable information based on the content. I never mind working just a little bit if you need to grab a really good link.

I read the content on sites when I leave a short review. If I have not a single thing to say of the blog post topic, I do not leave any wisecracks. And I enjoy to read somebody else’s views on that post likewise. Because I am able to find informative ideas in the nice comments. I would have posted “Good blog! Decent posts!” then I might be spamming your blog. I too possess a blog, one thing I might do each day when i signed up on my blog page is consider comments to my blogposts and manually approve or reject these remarks. Keywordluv not merely brings you more commenters. It boosts your position in search engines due to you’re not only on a large number of “dofollow blog lists” but in addition on a handful of those “keywordluv lists”. Cheers, Sara

The gulf oil spill is without doubt one of the most disgraceful events of our current millennium. While the attack of 9/11 was limited to that relatively small area of ground zero, this oil spill stretches out across the ocean, impacting innocent animals, many miles of the southern coast as well as industry of the southern USA. I really pray that this atrocity is solved as best as is possible.

According to recent estimates, the iTunes App Store has had a successful IOS 250,000 applications, the Android Market were sitting comfortably in the middle, with 80,000 titles, and the BlackBerry App World recently broke 10,000. Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
